Was investigating the best way to transfer funds overseas when a friend asked... Australian banks all rip you off, they make it all glamorous in their pretty online website so people are happy to pay the fees of over $22 for transfers of small amounts of $5k or eat the crap FX rates they give you.
http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/money/banking/travel-money/overseas-money-transfers.aspx
Even global banks like HSBC rip you off by offering zero interest on large balances and charging a multitude of fees. I have never been a fan of HSBC, only a fan of the building in HK with the 2 big lions lol
http://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/personal/savings/multi-currency
CBA (our largest bank) is just as bad
http://www.commbank.com.au/personal/international/foreign-currency-account/features-and-benefits.html
there is always something missing ie they have no online reporting access so you cannot access the account overseas.
Personally, I hate lining up in bank queues so I tried to find out if there were any options to avoid it and to get the best rate.

It would be great if one day there is a truly global bank so we can have just one multicurrency account instead of 50 accounts, which allows ATM withdrawals without fees and hidden costs. (perhaps foreign destination ATM fees are acceptable)
At the end of all the research, my conclusion for the best way to transfer funds from Australia to China/HK is to use Citibank. So you open an account here in Sydney, then open one in China/HK
and there are no fees for the transfer.
http://www.citibank.com.au/aus/banking/everyday_banking/citibank_plus.htm
Citibank Plus account is a fee free everyday account. What's more is that you'll also benefit from no international fees. This means no international ATM or point of sale fees when using your account abroad2, as well as free international money transfers to any account anywhere in the world. Funds will also be transferred instantly if sent to another Citibank account with Citibank Global Transfers3. The thing is they have a daily transfer limit. I will try and find out what it is as I cannot stand breaking up large amount into 50 transfers.
- Free international transfers available from Citibank Australia to select Citibank accounts in more than 25 countries worldwide using Citibank Global Transfers. Daily transfer limit applies. Funds are converted to the destination account currency at the exchange rate specified to you on Citibank Online before you confirm your transaction. This exchange rate includes a commission for the conversion service. Subject to local regulations, transfers will normally reach the destination account almost immediately after being effected, but in some cases (depending on the availability of processing facilities at the destination) may take a maximum of 24 hours.
I guess they make up the difference in the FX rate conversions but this post said the rates are competitive

NFC was something I was interested in when I bought my latest mobile. Unfortunately, it appears to be still not fully functional. Forget about Australia, always behind the times... HK appears to also be smoke and mirrors.
Paypal: NFC-enabled mobile wallet is complete hype
http://cw.com.hk/news/paypal-nfc-enabled-mobile-wallet-complete-hypePay as you move – is Hong Kong ready for a mobile wallet?
http://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=b5f8f089-fd61-444d-97d6-0deaf82b6737The idea of mobile wallet is just so stupid, we all leave our mobiles lying around when we charge the things....
anyway, this week I finally recovered from the food poisoning I got in Malaysia. Tip for you, never eat beef or lamb at dodgy looking chinese restaurants. I had severe and I mean severe vomiting and diarrhea the night of consumption, went to local Klinik and got an injection into bum and some meds. Went to sleep, but was still vomiting and pooing so hard the next week. Then back in Australia, it changed because in morning, 2 slices of bread, lunch, 2 burgers at Hungry Jacks. I was lucky because Hungry Jacks has a promo where you buy one get one free via vouchers they stuck in my mail box and my neighbours all threw out theirs so I have lots of vouchers. so for 6 bucks you can have 2 burgers hee hee
The plane was delayed by 2 hours from HK to Malaysia. During that time I had telstra global roaming but did not know how to dial out from HK as normally to dial out from Australia you put 0011 and the HK provider was CSL so I called telstra support, luckily telstra spammed me with 5 sms when I arrived in HK and then after a few attempts and being passed around for 15 minutes or more (wonder how much that cost me in global roaming costs), they gave me a number to use.
Today I was looking at mobile phone plans and the easy way should have been to just type "+" instead of putting in a code lol
"+" is the Mobile GSM standard for the international prefix (just like 0011 in Australia). Because each country has different international prefixes, it's much easier to just use "+".
https://community.virginmobile.com.au/t5/Phones-knowledge-base/Global-Roaming-What-do-I-need-to-know-about-using-my-Virgin/ta-p/42
I was looking for the cheapest monthly post paid mobile plan with global roaming at the cheapest rates.
A prepaid sim by Woolworths $29 AUD, has the cheapest rates I have ever seen, but I have not tested it.
http://www.woolworthsglobalroaming.com.au/Info/Rates.aspx
As to post-paid mobiles, so far Virginmobile offer the cheapest plan at $19 a month with $250 of calls and 250 mb of data but they are silent on their global roaming costs citing dependency on their partners (they use the optus network)
So the next best choice was Optus which $20 a month gets you $200 of voice and 200mb of data
https://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/SimBYO
charges for roaming
https://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/postpaidautoroam
Their rates are slightly more expensive than telstra but if you do the maths you pay $20 a month whereas Telstra's cheapest Byo plan is $50 a month so $30 x 12 = $360 more a year. I dont talk that much so Optus is the best bet :)
Obviously, I use wi-fi services such as Tango and wechat where possible since they are free. The only downside is having to call the other person first to get them onto tango and if they are long winded or lazy, then you have to pay the cost.... Also some airport wifi such as malaysia airport dont work which is why it is better to have global roaming on a phone. Plus these days, if you login to your google account in a foreign country, it sometimes needs to confirm your identity so it will sms to your mobile if you set it up, same goes for internet banking, you need to have a mobile to do transfers to new 3rd parties so set it up before travelling.
ps HK airport has several free courtesy phones to dial local hk numbers, just when you clear customs and walk around the corner.

Canon MX 926 printer review... (buy now if u are in australia to get double cashback. You will get at least $50 for the printer)
https://www.canon.com.au/Personal/Products/Special-Offers/PIXMADoubleCashback
Purchased a display model for AUD $189 after doing some research... ($139 after cashback... ) Didnt want to bother with older models since my notebook is windows 8 and this printer was released in 2013 so is fully compatible with windows 8 lol
Update 26102013: Note Canon will screw you on ink as the PGBK 650 black (the fat one as the thin one is for pictures) cost me $25 at Kmart and I mainly only print B&W. It runs out of ink pretty quickly as I printed less than 500 pages of assignment
If you want to be able to print, there are ways around the sensor thing (the sensor thing makes you have all ink cartridges with ink before you can print but if you only print b&w, thats lame)
http://www.inkbank.com.au/category105_1.htm
The only thing the majority of reviews were complaining about is the price and I got a good price lol. Goodgearguide.com.au has a nice discussion about the ink and says mx926 ink is great value for the xxl cartridges and if you buy a full set of ink with the printer in the promo period in first link above, you get another $50 cashback lol :)
http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/review/printers_scanners/canon/pixma_mx926/459569
PIXMA MX926 – key features:
· Powerful Office All-In-One with Wi-Fi/Ethernet
· 35-page 2-sided ADF
· Superior prints with 5 single inks
· XL & XXL ink options
· 250-sheet paper tray
· Print from, and scan to, smartphone/tablets
· Apple AirPrint support
· 7.5cm TFT display
· Google Cloud Print
· 2-sided printing
· Direct Disc Print
Ink costs more than a new low end model printer (in Asian Countries) which is why I decided to just buy new printer, mx 926 comes with 5 ink cartridges, including a big fat black one and a skinny black one.
If any color ink runs out, u normally need to replace the color even if u just print black and white:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090429055027AA8nYsd
It is quite impressive when compared to the older printer models out there, the best thing is not having to install canon's software or having to have a cable to connect from pc/notebook to the printer.
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/454070/product_snapshot_canon_pixma_mx926_multifunction_printer/
Allow at least half an hour to configure the printer. Another review said to install the software on your computer as it self-checks itself.
Anyway, there is a part after inserting the ink cartridges where you have to stick in the mp 101 test paper, i was like looking at the 2nd tray and thinking why didnt the a4 paper fit (there is a hidden cd tray below that one)
and it was the bottom tray that I should have been using lol ie there are 2 paper trays
Ok here is my real review. I bought a budget canon printer for my mother a few weeks ago when I was in HK. The pixma software that canon has really sux donkeyballz. If you google, most of the halfwits will tell you that you cannot scan directly to a pc direct from the printer/scanners unless software installed. That is a fallacy and i would have corrected them if i had an account which i could not bother to create. In windows 8 (and earlier versions) there is a function built in called windows fax and scan.
If you don't live in a 3rd world country and have wi-fi, then all you need to do is connect your mx926 to your wi-fi, if you forgot your password, go to the computer and then show the password, then go to the mx 926 and type it in.
Then you use windows fax and scan to scan as a picture image such as jpg which just about every computer on earth can view, there you go, you can now scan/print from any computer without having to be in proximity to the printer AND WITHOUT NEEDING TO INSTALL CANON'S ANNOYING SOFTWARE, as long as you are connected to wi-fi via your internet :) Of course the Canon scan is probably too high in quality, so you might want to use the jpg compression tools I reviewed earlier to downsize it or the other option is to use a free pdf driver and print to pdf and use adobe acrobat to shrink the pdf. Many options lol
google cloudprint is also heaps kewl, the printer will print out a sheet which you can scan with mobile barcode scanner or use weblink to activate.
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/standard_display/cloudprint
For scanning software, nothing beats the easy to use Vuescan Professional Edition 9.2.19 Final MultiLanguage (32 - 64 bit). You wanna know why? Its cos it will scan the OCR text so you dont need to convert using adobe acrobat ie you can then copy and paste the text from the pdf to fill in forms :)

http://dictate.uk.com/2012/09/journalist-essential-tool-journalism-voice-recorder-digital/
When I was in HK a week ago, I went direct to the factory/warehouse near Tsuen Wan to pick up one from the distributor. As Hong Kong is the greatest place for shopping on the face of the planet (everything can be bargained down in price), we managed to talk the price down so we saved hundreds of HKD off the retail price you would find in retail chains such as HK's Fortress.
Now, why would someone like me need a dictaphone/voice recorder that is built for professional purposes? Sure, some mobile phones have got a sound recorder functionality, however good luck if you can figure out how to use it or pull it out in time or make it work when there are phone calls coming in. I am also not a big fan of today's smart phones where you have to use touchscreen to navigate. by the time you turn on the voice recorder, your subject might have already lost their patience with you or disappeared.
Additionally, a lot of people talk a lot of hot air which in layman's terms means they do not deliver on their promises. Also, a lot of people come out of meetings not knowing what they agreed to. So the solution is to ask the parties to the meeting whether they will accept you recording (no need if you are buying stuff in a shop) them, and voila, you have proof of what they all agreed to. Also, it alleviates the pressure to take notes and listen in meetings or lectures.
Now the olympus Ws 812 has a lot of little brothers. I will now tell you why I did not choose any of them.
The lower end models do not have rechargable batteries. However, they do have longer battery life as they use 2 AAA instead of one AAA (I am talking about the models below WS 811 which have only got mono). The recharging in ws812 is built in so it uses the one rechargeable AAA and USB to charge. It is great because the design is such that the whole recorder body is actually a gigantic USB stick, obviously, I love my notebook so I will prop up the end of the recorder so the weight does not damage my USB port. Also, if you have 2 USB ports next to each other, the width of the recorder means you have to unplug one USB device to fit the recorder's USB.
IT has 4gb of built in storage and more than sufficient filesize recording. microSD card slot means you can add heaps more gb of storage.
It plays MP3 so if you have a tiny ipod nano like me, which I have never managed to get any of my favorite music collections (such as tunnel trance force or club fanatix) to fit on, you could consider using the ws 812 as a portable mp3 player once you have added your 32gb micro SD card with your mp3 collection lol.
Those are the additional features I found valuable in my consideration to purchase ws 812 over all other models. 813's extra benefits are non-existent over 812. My nokia n8 has a usb extension cable so if you want to continue to use your other usb port, you can have a normal cable USB as a connector when you use the usb extension cable. That is the only benefit of the 813 apart from a bit longer recording time and more built in storage (but microsd cards are cheap as chips these days which negates this benefit) The more expensive models than 812 or 813 has features that I would never use.
812 already has speech normalisation and removing blank air.
In summary, it serves as a great voice recorder and mp3 player, is very light to carry (so light you wont even notice its in your pocket) and with it, there is only one truth, no need to rely on memories or notes that could be lost in translation so you can tell your boss that you are right and s/he is wrong lol
I took it on a test run at the hospital and even though I had it hidden in my jumper's pocket, the recording of the doctor and my conversation was crystal clear. I recorded in 256kb mp3 format instead of the default wma format :)
---------------------------------------------------
Audacity 2.03 does not import dss or wma files
To get round this, I installed adobe audition cs6 to import wma and convert to wav as output and use in audacity
For Dss file conversion to wav, I installed NCH Switch Sound File Converter.
I used to use cool edit pro a lot when I was into music videos years ago and it was later reincarnated as adobe audition cs6. However, in recent years, Audacity 2.03 has been my preferred audio editing software for quick tasks.
But for advanced audio editing tasks, nothing beats audition cs6. The effects available are second to none.
There are some good plugins and standalone soft...
IZotope RX2 v2.10 VST x86 x64 is one of them. Very useful to remove noise and lets you compare before processing... 5 stars out of 5 lol
eg for the time it took me to follow this audition tutorial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqnZ-7DsQcw
I just installed Izotope and with 2 clicks using Izotope, I did what I wanted and saved much more time.
I found this lovely audio software review site

I used to use photorar for winrar to compress images but since I now have a ssd core i7 notebook, I use photoshop cs6 to do it.
there are 2 ways to compress images for emailing
This way is more precise
http://www.ripperdesignandmultimedia.com/2013/01/10/photoshop-cs6-batch-processing-multiple-images-ready-for-web/
or you can just use the File - scripts - image processor and then choose jpeg as the output whereby all the 4mb+ photos will be compressed down to somewhere between 500k to 1mb
but to be honest, photorar for winrar 2011 is the best option...
I noticed that the authors have no longer updated the photorar since 2011 so I tried the next best thing they had on offer advanced jpeg compressor 201293101 from
http://www.bagas31.com
it looks identical to photorar but is 2012 version so should be more advanced lol.
The only downside of these software is that it does not read Chinese characters so I have to manually rename all the files to English

I have now decided to create a list of things I like and things I dislike so I can reflect back on them later
May 2013 (In HK/Malaysia)
Thinks I liked this month...
My ACER notebook V3-771 -The SSD and core i7 enabled me to complete all my multi tasking/video/audio editing smoothly without a hiccup and the 1TB storage is fantastic, this is a huge change from my last Acer notebook which died on me. The keyboard layout is perfect and responsive (I have vowed never to buy another ASUS notebook every again or an MSI as their right arrow key protrudes over the zero key which is the most annoying thing on earth. Only ACER makes proper keyboards for notebooks (Alienware keyboards have the right click menu key missing which is pain in butt when using m$ Excel). The only thing I have to complain about it is the 17.3 inch display as it is one of those that you need to sit at the correct angle, otherwise it will blur/look dark. I would have paid an extra 300 AUD for a good display (to watch movies with) I took the ACER notebook with me on my travels to HK as it was brand new and going through the various airport scans, I did not want to damage my Alienware (plus the alienware is a tonne of bricks and too thick ie put it in my backpack and I cannot fit much whereas with this Acer, I could fit my padfone 2 phablet as well as heaps of other stuff)
Windows 8 feature: airplane mode) - Time saving feature, a lot of software installers these days need internet turned off. Windows 7 sux balls because I would have had to change the password for wireless to stop the reconnection via WIFI and change it back once software installed.
Excel 2013 and Word 2013 - both are very fast on my Acer notebook and any annoyances compared to the good old 2007 version can be forgiven due to seamless integration with windows 8.

Food
Buffet at Jogoya restaurant in Malaysia is one of my favorite Buffet/Japanese restaurants in the whole world.
http://www.jogoyarestaurants.com/jogoya-malaysia.html
When I was young, i went to all the buffet restaurants I could find in Australia. Eventually, the only ones worth eating for the prices charged were very few and places like Auburn RSL is not exactly my cup of tea although I will admit I have been there over 20 times lol. Shangrila is overpriced and the food is crap. Sheraton 4 points Seafood buffet also lousy. So in summary, Australia's buffet lunch or dinner is the worst in the whole world.
Now Hong Kong has heaps of great buffet dinner/lunch places which you can find in all sorts of remote areas which are value for $$$ but the decor and experience are more or less the same.
Therefore, nothing seems to give you the experience that you can get from Starhill's Jogoya in Malaysia. The fact that you can get Häagen-Dazs ice cream as well as there being tonnes of other lovely dessert to choose from, tonnes of beverages included in the price including cocktails, tonnes of seafood (even more if you have access to a VIP card), great decor, makes it the best value for money buffet anywhere I have experienced. Also, it is centrally located in the upper floors of a posh mall in the middle of KL which makes it even better.

Things I disliked
Team EAT - Atomix Virtual DJ pro 7.4 was just home version, not pro
Google chrome shockwave player flash browser plugin not working. Forced me to use firefox.... This chrome error is well documented all over the internet yet the stupid google guys are doing nothing about it. Yes, adobe makes crap software that screws your installation temp folder up, but Google also has responsibility to make sure their browser works with industry standard plugins.
HK despite being a so called financial centre, has heaps of old ladies in bank queues with passbooks that need updating and they still use chequebooks a lot and the queues.. if you can picture the queue at disneyland california for a ride... and the idiot tellers who dont know anything and have to ask their supervisors
Quick SFV - this old classic program did not work on windows 8 (x64 beta version) so I installed SFV Ninja 1.1.6 instead which works http://skwire.dcmembers.com/fp/?page=sfv-ninja
Apple iTunes 11.0.2 for Windows (64-bit) - Could not detect my 6gb ipod nano and the crappy interface is for apple users not windows users.... As mentioned previously, Apples engineers wouldn't know how to hold their butts with their two hands when it comes to user friendliness or windows software programming. I hope their stock price plummets so they get what they deserve! Anyway, for those of you who only use itunes for ipod like me, here is the older version 9 or 10 which still detects ipods properly.
http://www.oldapps.com/betasearch.php?cx=007779823686351122034%3Ai7o_lb6edjm&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=itunes&sa=Search
I always dread installing itunes on windows but if you installed version 11 and uninstalled and want to install version 9 or 10 like me, you will come across this bullsh!t itl library error message. It is solved here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4564237?start=0&tstart=0
Alternatively, delete all itunes folders in my music & program files and program files (x86) folders before installing version 9 :)
I had not updated my ipod for years and there is a 1.2 update which has supersized buttons and makes it easier to navigate on the ipod nano. I used to use Nike+ipod a lot but now I am into shorter distance running so I cant even remember where I put the ipod receiver and which shoe the transmitter is in lol
Note to edit ipod's playlist and play songs/delete songs on your nanon, you need to click the "manually manage music" checkbox on the first page that shows when you connect your nano (after clicking the music icon on the left panel under Devices - nano). My library of actual mp3 is long gone as I gave my old notebooks away lol I have been listening to the same 6gb of songs for several years. So therefore, I have to use 3rd party software... as the itunes method does not have the full file name... The one I chose to use is

How to backup all your existing yahoomail inbox to gmail for free without having to pay for yahoo plus account (this is my own research as of 22nd May 2013 and testing working 100% for windows 8 - klumsyboy productions research second to none):
Yahoomail sux, pop forwarding requires the paid $20 version before you can forward your emails or download to outlook, stay away from it or you will be sorry (unless u r rich)
in my journey to go where no man has ever gone before, I installed emclient 5 free version and then found an older pro version and then got a database error, the sneaky programmers had a whole bunch of crap in the C:\Users\your windows username\AppData\Roaming\eM Client
folder which you have to manually delete before installing the older pro version. All the best uninstallers will not help in this regard lol.
after fiddling around with all the free email clients I could find, I saw the light.
1. install Thunderbird 17.xx version (Mozilla's free email client made by makers of firefox)
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
you can also download the portable version from portableappz.com so you do not physically have to install a single program, but if you are paranoid about your passwords like some ppl I know, best to install the official programs lol
don't create a new account (it will offer an indian looking provider) so uncheck the 2 default options, then on next section, put in your yahoo account login user and password)
It will then download all the emails you have in your yahoo inbox including attachments, not sure if it downloads stuff in folders, for me 13500 emails took about 6 hours, and a few gb of hdd space.
https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail#w_configuring-your-gmail-account
If you are happy to have all the yahoo mail sitting on your hdd, good for you, but if you want to back it up to a free gmail account, then here are the next steps
2. uploading from Thunderbird 17.xx to a free gmail account - the fastest way possible
2.0 Create a free gmail account if you have not already done so. There is no need to add the gmail account to Thunderbird unless you really want to redownload all the crap you are about to upload!
Download this little portable app = GWFTB v2.9: Last GPL version Last Updated: Monday, 2013.02.04 - This is last GPL version: 2.9.0.0
(version 3 and above is trialware which offers no additional benefits over 2.9 and I tested 2.9 only)
http://admincraft.org/arts/gmail.filer.html#download
You need to populate it with the gmail account login user name and password and
the mail folder
http://admincraft.org/arts/gmail.filer.html#howto
2.1 how to find the mail folder for thunderbird for use in GWFTB:
You put your username in the address and the ***** represents random characters that are different for every profile.
Here's a shortcut. Start>Run>type %APPDATA%/Thunderbird/Profiles>OK.
The alternative was to change it before you started downloading the yahoo account to a shorter file path as you cannot paste the path, and have to use the GWFTB v2.9 to locate the mbox file.
Generally speaking, just select the folder C:\Users\"Your windows user name" if you are using win 7 or 8
and the right hand side will show all your thunderbird inbox folders.
Check to left of the yahoo inbox
I chose to use "good old filenames" and above I had left the Native "all mail" checkbox blank
I then clicked the biggest button in GWFTB and it started uploading all the thunderbird email I had downloaded in step 1 above to my gmail inbox.
You can choose different options if you wish to see which option ends up with the best details in gmail inbox for you (using different gmail accounts) and let it run for hours each lol
Et Voila, that is my tutorial for free backup of yahoo mail to gmail without needing to install any apps (but requiring 2 portable apps, namely Thunderbird and GWFTB 2.9). My method is the best on the internet, fastest possible and 2nd to none as of today, May 22nd 2013
Of course, speed of my method assumes you have fast internet upload and download and stable connection, with good computer ie core i7 and stable when multitasking assuming you are like me and do lots of things at the sametime lol
Honestly, I do not know why anyone would choose to use yahoo mail, it simply is the worst after its forced facelift to the new tabbed email. There is no way to switch back to classic view and for all the Mom and dad type users I have had to help, they all ran out of tabs and had to close tabs without having any idea of what was happening to their email. It is just so user unfriendly, the IT programming idiots who created the tabbed yahoo mail should be shot.
